And we're back.

I apologize for being such a slacker with my blog, but at least I have a few good excuses. The main reason is because I have been completely immersed in a book that I literally could not put down. It is Beautiful Boy by David Sheff, and I picked it up in the Denver airport so I could have something to read on the flight back. I would wholeheartedly recommend this book about a father who watches his son go through a hellish addiction to every drug in the book, particularly meth. You will never hate somebody so bad but love them at the same time - its the most ambivalent I have ever felt about a character in a book - except it is a true story. The story is written through the perspective of the addicts father, and it is sobering to think of the pain and suffering his son caused him and his family. I have always been fairly ignorant of the drug world out there, and after reading this book it makes me even more scared to raise a child in this world. Please read it. Its hard to read but impossible to put down. In the last two or three pages of the book, I learned the addict himself, Nic Sheff, wrote a book called Tweaked, which is drug language for high, stoned, etc. I immediately went to Amazon. com and bought the book and I can't wait to read about the same story from a different perspective.

The reason it took an entire week to read this book is because I have been going back to the gym every day after work, and it wears me out. By 8:30, I can barely keep my eyes open and all I can think of is crawling under my wonderful electric blanket and reading my book until I conk. Usually all I have time for after my work out is fixing a quick bite to eat and obliterate Aaron in a quick game of chess before I am the typical cliche - curled up in bed with a good book.

The Rice's don't have anything exciting to report back. Aaron is back in school and back to staying up into the wee hours reading. Every now and then, if I am lucky, I get to be lectured by Aaron about a wide variety of issues, including liberty, economics, political strategies, public policy, and social issues. The highlight was when Aaron made me sit at the kitchen table with him while he "Wikepedia'd" Barry Goldwater. Yes, we had an extensive discussion about the senator and how he reformed the Republican Party, and no, I did not say one word. I cleaned the entire house with Aaron Rice in my shadow who felt the need to follow me room to room and continue this discussion. Ah, the joys of being married to a nerd.

I wish I had something exciting to blog about, but this is not the case. And rather than ramble on as I usually do, I will cut this short. Bill O'Reilly doesn't wait for me to finish blogging to start his show. He will most definitely read the doozy of the e-mail I wrote about the inauguration on the air tonight. I am under the secret pen name "Anne from Mississippi" because I didn't want him to see "Kelly from Oxford" and toss it in the trash for frequent annoyance. Until next time.
